Where is the Good Way

March 23, 2021

I started reading Jeremiah again. Have you ever read this book in the Bible? There is some harsh stuff in that book. While reading it, I was noticing that the behaviors of the Israelites against God were remarkably like those of this nation right now. And I cannot help but think about the policies that the Biden administration are implementing that fly in the face of God. “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord.” (Jeremiah 6:15) I have some stress and anxiety associated with the way this nation is going with the new administration, but what is more fearful is God’s judgment on a nation that rejects Him and His ways. God will not be mocked. And wow, is this current President and his administration mocking God.

As I continued to read this book, my heart felt heavy. This nation is ripe for God’s judgment. But, I kept reading and came to this scripture: “Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.” (Jeremiah 10:23-24) When we read God’s Word, we discover who He is. We learn His character; we get to know Him. He is good, loving, kind, righteous and full of righteous judgment. We also learn that He delights in these qualities. So, after reading that scripture, the heaviness of my heart lifted, and I reminded myself to focus on God’s goodness and love; to focus on the goal of cultivating these qualities, the qualities that God delights in, in me and my family.

You see, God is holy, and sin cannot be in His presence. In chapters like Jeremiah and Isaiah, God warns the Israelites through His prophets of His righteous judgment and wrath; but He also sprinkles in reminders of His patience, kindness, and love. God is longsuffering and He wants this nation to turn back to Him. “Thus saith the Lord, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” (Jeremiah 6:16) When we walk with the Lord, we find rest for our souls. This scripture does not say “you may find rest”, it says “you SHALL find rest”. Notice how verse 16 ends? “But…”. “But they said, We will not walk therein.” What?! They chose not to walk in the ways of the Lord. And here we are in this nation making that same choice. A choice that draws us away from God and strips our soul of rest. We are watching that choice play out in our nation in real time. This nation’s soul is in turmoil. One nation no longer under God. I don’t want this. I don’t want this for my daughter. I want “One nation under God” back.

Then the Lord led me to Psalm 143. Verse 8 and 10 says, “Cause me to hear thy loving-kindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift my soul unto thee. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.” And Psalm 144:15 says, “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the Lord.”  My God is the Lord. My hope and trust are in Jesus Christ. He will show me “wherein I should walk”.  My family and I will choose to walk in His ways. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world…” (Philippians2:13-15)

Let us choose to walk in the ways of the Lord and “shine as lights in the world”. I must believe that God is not done with this nation because His Word says that His mercy endures forever. But this nation cannot continue to turn its back on God and mock Him. I am praying for President Biden and for this nation, and I hope y’all are too.
